The Present Simple tense is one of the most important structures in English. We use it to talk about routines, habits, facts, permanent situations, schedules, opinions, and repeated actions. Because it appears constantly in everyday English and in exams, understanding its positive, negative, and question forms is essential.
When Do We Use the Present Simple?
- Routines and habits: I usually start work at eight.
- Facts and general truths: Water boils at 100°C.
- Permanent or long-term situations: She lives in Ankara.
- Timetables and schedules: The train leaves at 6:30.
- Opinions, feelings and states: I believe this answer is correct.
Present Simple Structure
- Positive: I/You/We/They + base verb; He/She/It + verb-s/es.
- Negative: I/You/We/They + do not (don’t) + base verb; He/She/It + does not (doesn’t) + base verb.
- Questions: Do + I/you/we/they + base verb? Does + he/she/it + base verb?
Third-Person Singular Spelling
- Most verbs add -s: work → works, read → reads.
- Verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x or -o usually add -es: watch → watches, go → goes.
- Consonant + y changes to -ies: study → studies. Vowel + y simply adds -s: play → plays.
- Have is irregular: have → has.
Adverbs of Frequency
- Always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely and never are common with the Present Simple.
- They normally come before the main verb: She often reads at night.
- With the verb be, they normally come after be: He is usually busy.
Common Mistakes
- Incorrect: She go to school every day. Correct: She goes to school every day.
- Incorrect: He doesn’t works here. Correct: He doesn’t work here.
- Incorrect: Does she likes coffee? Correct: Does she like coffee?
- Do not use the Present Continuous for permanent facts when the Present Simple is required.
